2010.11.01: Third-Party Candidates

The Green Party needs 50,000 votes to get ballot status. If you do not want to vote for Cuomo, consider voting for Hawkins.  It will help a third-party get established in New York, particularly when it runs candidates for city council or assembly races.

Just a reminder to vote tomorrow.

And if you want to upgrade your vote, as the UAW and SEIU/1199 recommend, then vote straight Working Families Party Row E (actually Column E, in NYC) , the union/community/progressive ballot line, especially:

Cuomo                Hold your nose, but the WFP needs 50,000 votes in the governor’s race to remain a ballot party.

Schneiderman     Actually a positive vote, for a true progressive, and in a very tight race.

Harpaz/Schaeffer   ALAA’s very own, running in Brooklyn on WFP/Row E for supreme court judges.

By voting WFP, you are sending a message, to the Dems in particular, that living wages, progressive taxation, paid sick days, affordable housing and universal health care really are important to you. At the same time, you are not voting to spoil and not therefore indirectly helping the reactionary tea/republican party.

But remember NOT to vote twice in the same race (by, for example, circling Cuomo’s name under BOTH the democratic and WFP lines). If you do that, the scanner will not alert you to your double vote and count the Democratic Party vote and not count the WFP vote.(A federal lawsuit against this discriminatory practice in on appeal).

Thanks.

Other alternatives, so that we won’t always be stuck with the “choice” of anti-labor Democrats and Republicans:

Vote Charles Barron For Governor! – November 2nd
Nationally funded single-payer health care system. Abolish all anti-labor laws that limit or prohibit the right to strike, or organize and join unions or to negotiate contracts. Halt the crisis of Black and Latino men going to prison and establish programs to reduce recidivism. Stop police brutality, killings and misconduct. End all wars of aggressions and occupation.

Howie Hawkins for Governor of New York State
It is time for working people to give up choosing between bad and worse. It is time to find our own independent voice. End drug prohibition: legalize, regulate, and tax drugs, starting with marijuana. End the Wars, Troops Home Now, Dismantle the Global Military Empire.

We are suppose to “hold our nose” and vote for Cuomo who has vowed an offensive against Labor Unions just so the WFP can remain a ballot party?  Something seems odd here…
