It’s not just teachers occupying the PEP meeting. I’m going to be there with my two kids to testify too. I encourage other DOE parents to do the same.
The PEP is Bloomberg’s fake Board of Ed that rubber stamps all his decisions. These meetings, which are open to the public, have been the target of education activists for some time. Especially when the PEP is voting on school closings, 100s of parents, teachers and students have come out to defend their school and testify against the closings, only to have the panel vote almost unanimously against them.
The PEP has the audacity to call this meeting for a dialogue about “raising standards in the classroom” while the City has systematically cut critical funding this year that’s led to ever increasing class sizes, the laying off of school aids, and the elimination of all sorts of services and programs.
Folks should also know that teachers in LA have set up an encampment outside the LA Unified School District, with the demands: 1) Tax the 1 percent to fully fund our schools; 2) Keep our schools public–by the 99 percent, for the 99 percent; and 3) Democratic community-based schools, not corporate Wall Street reform.
Hope to see you at the PEP meeting.
