Subject: Addt’l agenda item for November 1st general membership and JC mtg: Formation of an ALAA “Action” Committee
Debbie and fellow ALAA members:
I propose that our union establish a committee to deal with external issues that directly affect our practice, our clients, and our livelihood.
It is wonderful that Julie Fry, Michael Letwin and others have mobilized our union to become active in the OWS movement and as a result there is now an ALAA sub-committee strategizing on what role we should have there. An “action” committee is necessary in order to provide an immediate and appropriate response when events like OWS occur. This committee would allow us to be at the forefront of relevant issues and to be pro-active rather than re-active. The committee would monitor ongoing issues that may require a public response and have immediate access to all media outlets.
For example, in addition to our involvement in the OWS movement, this committee would have been valuable in formulating an immediate response to Commissioner Kelly’s policy change on charging people for marijuana possession after a stop and frisk during which they are directed to empty their pockets. This Friday there is a march opposing NYPD’s stop and frisk policy that starts at the Harlem State Office building at 1:30 p.m. Some of the protestors plan to participate in civil disobedience. Shouldn’t our union have a role there by either declaring public support for the marchers and the cause, or by marching or by providing legal observers, or all three? Debbie and George obviously have to spend a majority of their time addressing other issues relevant to our union. However, these issues are also relevant and need to be supported. An “action” committee would be a great way of accomplishing this.
Also per Debbie, the November 1st meeting is a general membership meeting followed by the JC meeting. Another item on the agenda besides those proposed by [M] is “complaints regarding the election process”(see excerpt below). Please come and be heard on all these issues and/or share your views with your delegate.
“…1) hearing a report by the election committee about the election process, 2) hearing any protests or complaints about the election, and 3) swearing in the newly elected Executive Officers …””
