If you can volunteer to be an attorney on call,  please contact the Chapter office (212) 679-6018

What: Request for on call attorneys for survivors of Gaza flotilla returning to New York
When: Thursday, June 17 – arrival JFK approx. 2:45pm

Dear all:

This Thursday, June 17th in NYC there will be an event featuring three
passengers on the Mavi Marmara (see below for the flyer).  In light of
the threats of denial of entry or prosecution made against the
passengers by US congresspersons, it would be good to have some NLG
attorneys in the NYC area on call in case the three experience any
problems when they arrive from overseas.  Please reply if you would
like to put your name on such a list.

Eyewitness Accounts, Background on the Events

On May 31,2010, Israeli forces raided the Mavi Marmara, along with
several other boats that were travelling as part of a flotilla
carrying humanitarian supplies to Gaza in international waters. Within
minutes nine passengers were killed, five of whom were shot in the
head, and dozens more were injured. The Israeli raid provoked outrage,
protests, and international condemnation over the past week.

On June 17th, Former Turkish Member of Parliament, Ahmet Faruk Unsal,
who is also a member of the Turkish charitable organization IHH and
was a participant in an earlier land convoy to Gaza, will discuss the
implications of Turkish involvement in the Break the Siege Efforts,
the Impact of the attacks on the Mavi Marmara on Turkish domestic and
foreign policy vis-à-vis the US, Israel, and the Arab world, and the
huge outpouring of outrage and determination within Turkey after the

Also speaking will be Kevin Ovenden, aide to British MP George
Galloway and a lead organizer of all the Viva Palestina convoys to
Gaza. Mr. Ovenden was on board the Mavi Marmara during the attack, and
in interviews since then has described how Israeli commandos\
surrounded and attacked the ship, firing live rounds of gunshots as
they boarded before any attempt at self-defense was made by any of the
flotilla participants.
Hearing the testimonies of these two eyewitnesses to events in Turkey,
Palestine and on the high seas is crucial given the disinformation
about the events and the motivations behind them which has been spread
by the Israeli government and is only just now beginning to be
challenged in the mainstream US media. Organizers say they hope that
this event will set the record straight.

The Gaza Freedom flotilla was part of an international attempt to end
the ongoing Israeli siege of Gaza which began in June of 2007,
following internationally monitored elections by the Palestinians
which put Hamas into office.  The siege has caused the Palestinians of
Gaza to live in what the UN High Commission on Human Rights called
conditions of unacceptable suffering.  While numerous UN bodies and
International governments have called for an immediate end to the
Israeli blockade, none have actively worked to end the siege.

The event is cosponsored by a wide range of Arab and Muslim community
groups and others, including Al-Awda-New York: The Palestine Right to
Return Coalition, International Socialist Organization, Muslim
American Society, International Action Center, FIST, American Muslims
For Palestine, NYC Labor Against the War, International Jewish
Anti-Zionist Network, Arab Muslim American Federation, Labor For
Palestine, Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine, Action for a
Progressive Pakistan, ANSWER Coalition, Anakbayan, Bayan USA, Creative
Nonviolent Resistance against Injustice, Gabriela USA, International
League of Peoples Struggle–NY/LOC, Middle East Crisis Response, El
Beireh Society, The Indypendent, Socialist Action, WESPAC

Admission is $20, $15 for Students. All proceeds will go to support
families of the martyrs of the Mavi Marmara.
